Price Chopper Pharmacy is part of a family-owned supermarket chain local to the Kansas City area. Comprised of 28 grocery stores with 19 pharmacies, with the resident based in the Grandview, Missouri location. UMKC has trained community residents since 1996. The company provides outstanding corporate support for pharmacy services and received the 2018 Pinnacle Award from the APhA Foundation for demonstrating exceptional leadership in enhancing health care quality and medication use. The UMKC and Balls Foods preceptors form a highly qualified, diverse group of practitioners. Several preceptors are alumni of the residency programs through Balls Foods Stores. In addition to community pharmacy, backgrounds include: ambulatory care, clinical service management, chain pharmacy management, and nationally recognized research. The residents will provide medication therapy management, disease-state management in diabetes and cardiovascular disease, transition of care management, develop new and continue existing patient care programs, learn about new practice opportunities, charge for their services, provide community outreach, learn about practice management and managerial functions, complete a practice-based research project, and travel to national and state pharmacy meetings. A teaching certificate program will provide opportunities in classroom teaching, precepting students, providing community education, and interacting with other health professionals. Each resident spends ½ day per week in an ambulatory care clinic—family medicine, anticoagulation, and pain management; and other experiences tailored to meet the goals of each resident.
