This position is primarily responsible for the feeding and care of dairy calves located at the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, MN. The schedule will be set through consultation with the other calf feeders. The employee holding this position should be compassionate towards animals, willing to learn how to care for dairy calves, and willing to learn how to properly record data in a research setting. If interested, we will train you on taking blood samples from calves, and you can assist with tagging, vaccinating, weighing, downloading calf sensor data, dehorning calves, and other research projects. You do not need to have experience handling animals to have this job!
Responsibilities include:
Cleaning feeding equipment (milk dispensers, buckets, group calf feeders, etc.)
Collect experimental data for an organic dairy cow and calf projects.
Assist with data collection for other dairy research studies.
Collect data from precision technology and cows and calves.
Processing manure samples for parasite load.
Labeling extraction tubes, and recording samples processed in lab project binder.
Feeding and watering dairy calves
Monitoring the overall health of the calves and reporting any issues to the supervisor
Keeping the calf barn and work areas clean and tidy
Assisting with collecting weaning measurements of calves
