The Dining Service and Events Department at St. John’s University invites applications for the full time, benefits eligible position of Assistant Manager of Dining Services and Events.
Key responsibilities include: floor supervision for the Refectory; Supervise service for catered functions and special events; Supervise service of meals for the monastic community; Leadership for Service Associates, volunteer staff, and student employees; Ensure excellent customer service and Benedictine hospitality is extended to internal and external guests; Assist with leadership, goal setting, and annual planning for the department of Dining Service and Events.

Responsibilities
Provide training, guidance, counsel, coaching, and mentorship to Service Associates, student employees, and volunteer employees. (35%)
Prepare work schedules for Service Associates, volunteer staff, and student employees; arrange for additional staffing through community volunteer groups, as necessary.
Communicate service standards and expectations directly with support, student, and provisional staff.
Ensure safe service of food and beverages by following established food code.
Ensure safety of employees and customers by following safety guidelines.
Provide work direction to support, student, provisional, and volunteer staff in food preparation and quality service for internal and external guests.
Communicate and implement service policies and procedures.
Prepare and deliver performance reviews.
Act as a mentor to student managers, student supervisors, and student employees.
Serve as lead employee to provide excellent service and Benedictine hospitality to internal and external guests in the Refectory and at the Monastery. (30%)
Supervise front-of-house service in the university’s student dining room (The Refectory).
Supervise meal service for the monastic community.
Review traffic flow and dining room set-up to facilitate customer flow and comfort.
Restock supplies for service stations in student dining room.
Monitor presentation of food products for freshness, quality, and visual appeal.
Effectively address customer concerns and act as a resource for customers and visitors through personal interaction and quality service.
Serve as lead employee to provide excellent service and Benedictine hospitality to internal and external guests at catered functions and special events. (30%)
Supervise service at catered functions and events to ensure customer comfort and enjoyment.
Monitor presentation of food and settings for plated, buffet, and delivery events to ensure freshness, quality, and visual appeal.
Effectively address customer concerns and act as a resource for customers and visitors through personal interaction and quality service.
Determine and order catering supplies needed for events.
Participate as part of the Dining and Events leadership team (5%)
Assist with leadership, goal setting, and annual planning for the department.
Perform other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED
Experience effectively supervising, directing, and coaching teams of employees
ServSafe® certification in food safety or willingness and ability to obtain within 12 months from date of hire.
Knowledge of excellent customer service and effective staff supervision techniques.
Skilled in creating visually pleasing table settings, buffets, and service stations using props, service, and décor items.
Able to learn and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment with minimal direction.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Sound analytical and problem-solving skills.
Able to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks.
